Hi, I'm Devan-

Kristin Ess Scalp Care Collection Review

Kristin Ess Scalp Care Collection Review

I am wasting no time here, and jumping right into the reviews. I have never received more requests for a blog post than this one, so here it goes! I have been testing all of these products for about 6 weeks now, as I bought them a few days before the launch. Kristin then sent the entire collection to me about two weeks after launch, and here we are!

KRISTIN ESS is CRUELTY FREE, COLOR + KERATIN SAFE, FREE OF SULFATES, PARABENS, PHTHALATES, and SILICONES.

A little bit about my hair to start:

My hair is THICCC, curly, naturally dry, and I dye it so it is even drier. I also use product every time I do my hair routine that includes curl creams, gel, sprays, etc. and use dry shampoo a lot (less to keep oil at bay, but more to keep volume at my roots) so my curls don’t fall flat. I wash my hair only 1x a week.

I don’t follow the curly girl method because if I use cleansing conditioner at my roots alone, with no shampoo, it makes my hair super oily and weighs down my curls. My hair also likes some water soluble silicones and is much happier with them— more defined & bouncier curls! A post with my haircare routine is on my list to get up in the near future :)

Scalp Purifying Micellar Shampoo

What is it?

A purifying shampoo, meant to be rotated with your regular shampoo, that washes away build up and impurities, but leaves your moisture intact. 10oz/$12

How do you use it?

Wet your hair, then create partings with the pointed tip and apply shampoo directly to scalp.

  1. Massage it in to create a rich lather. Add a little water if needed.

  2. Work shampoo through the middle and ends as you rinse it out. Repeat if necessary.

My Review

I have a few complaints about most micellar shampoos— they are either so stripping for my scalp and/or hair, and leave that squeaky clean feeling, or they don’t actually remove buildup. This is hands down one of the best clarifying shampoos I’ve tried. It lathers beautifully, and not only feels super hydrating, but is! It left my hair and scalp hydrated, but not oily, greasy or weighed down at all. I will definitely repurchase.

I reach for this when…

I have product build up (hello, pounds of dry shampoo), but don’t necessarily need the exfoliation from a scrub. I also used this in combo with the scrub, when I wanted a bit more clarifying but needed the exfoliation, and they were a gorgeous duo together.

Scalp Detoxifying Bubble Mask

What is it?

This bubbling scalp mask is designed to remove oil, build-up, dead surface skin cells + debris. You use it as a pre-shampoo scalp treatment on dry hair before you shower, and it pops like pop-rocks on your scalp! 4.5oz/$14

How do you use it?

Before showering, shake well and section hair.

  1. Dispense a golf ball sized amount of foam into your hands and apply to the scalp.

  2. Massage the foam into your scalp focusing on areas with build-up or flakes.

  3. Once the bubbles subside (could take anywhere from 1-3 minutes) follow with shampoo and conditioner.

My Review

So, the first time I used this I didn’t follow the directions at all. I think for the scalp line it is pretty key to follow Kristin’s directions to a T. I didn’t really shake that well, what came out was more liquid-y than foam, and it FROZE my fingers off, and I also didn’t get a lot of the popping. Once I talked to Kristin, and followed the directions exactly, I loved the results. The foam will feel really cold in your hand for about 10 seconds, but then warms up. The cooling feels SO good, especially if you have any red, itchy, irritated patches. I also felt like it got rid of product buildup, balanced my scalp, and my hair didn’t feel greasy or dry either. I would maybe repurchase this, but I don’t think I’ll get as much use out of this product than others in the line, since I prefer to use it mostly when my scalp is irritated. I feel like this bottle could honestly last me a year. I think this is a great option if you want the exfoliation/balancing, but do not enjoy scalp scrubs.

I reach for this when…

I have product build up, an itchy, irritated scalp that is angry and needs some cooling and soothing. I sometimes get red itchy patches on my scalp during the coldest part of winter, and this helps soothe my scalp a ton! I also think it will feel amazing in the summer— Texas heat is no joke!

Instant Exfoliating Scalp Scrub

What is it?

This is a non-drying scrub to remove flakes, product build-up, excess sebum, and hard water deposits from the scalp, giving you a cleaner canvas through gentle exfoliation. It is formulated with a sugar complex to keep natural moisture intact. 6.7oz/$14

How do you use it?

Wet your hair. Use the pointed tip to part your hair and apply scrub directly on the scalp.

  1. Gently massage the scrub in small circles.*

  2. Rinse well. Then follow with shampoo and conditioner.

* Don’t use if your scalp has cracks or open sores... it won’t feel good.

My Review

My biggest complaints when it comes to scalp scrubs are that they are extremely stripping (hello, Christophe Robinson’s sea salt scrub), or it’s a real challenge to rinse the chunks out of your hair (I experienced this a little bit with the Ouai’s body and scalp scrub). This scrub comes out feeling thickity thick and sticky. I honestly had concerns at first that it would get stuck in my hair and I’d struggle to rinse it out. This was not the case at all— it’s sugar based so I found the granules to be smaller, but not so small that they don’t exfoliate. It also is much more hydrating, and my scalp and hair didn’t feel feel stripped or oily either. A definite repurchase!

I reach for this when…

I want to remove product build-up at the scalp, and also exfoliate away dryness and flakes.

Weightless Hydration Daily Scalp & Hair Mask

What is it?

A multi-tasking mask that uses natural minerals and botanical oils to calm and rebalance the scalp + smooth damaged cuticles. Kristin wanted to make a mask that can be used daily and also wouldn’t leave your roots looking and feeling oily. 6.7oz/$14

How do you use it?

Shampoo hair with a scalp shampoo. Rinse well.

  1. Apply mask from root to tip. Work it into the scalp with your fingertips.

  2. Wait a minute or two or ten (however long you have is fine) then rinse well.

My Review

I use hair masks quite a bit given that my hair is DRY AF. But, I can’t apply them anywhere NEAR my roots or I will be an oily, greasy mess for the next week. This mask is gorgeous at the roots, and I feel like not only does it add hydration back to my scalp and roots, but I feel like it just keeps my hair stronger, so I experience less breakage/fly aways. I do think I still need to use a heavier/more hydrating mask at me ends, (like Kristin’s Reconstructive Moisture Mask, or Briogeo’s, since my ends are SO dry, and I don’t find this hydrating enough. I think this is going to be suited really well to people with finer/thinner hair who maybe feel like other hair masks are TOO much for their hair. A repurchase for sure— I love pairing this at the roots, with a heavier mask at my ends! Hydration from root to tip.

I reach for this when…

I want to add some hydration to my scalp/roots, strengthen my hair and prevent breakage.

Anytime Anywhere Scalp + Hair Milk Oil

What is it?

A pH balanced bi-phase milk oil designed to hydrate + protect. The oil phase combines avocado, olive, jojoba + castor oils to restore moisture and rejuvenate the scalp and hair. The milk phase uses panthenol + a shea-based emollient complex to add instant softness and shine. It can be used on wet or dry hair. .95oz/$14

How do you use it?

Shake the bottle to blend the oil and milk together. Fill dropper and apply anywhere from scalp to tip.

Use for Styling: Shake to blend then work from middle to ends on wet hair before air-drying, or use on dry hair to calm frizz + boost shine.

My Review

As mentioned, I have super thick hair. I need to use half of this bottle on my wet hair to really add enough hydration back into my hair. Therefore, I really like this on the scalp. It’s nice and hydrating, and balances/soothes my scalp. I also like it on my dry hair. to help add moisture to curls and tame flyaways (frizz crown) for curly haired folks. I wouldn’t repurchase this product, just because I don’t think I get enough use out of it, and other products in her line help balance my scalp, and I prefer to use Kristin Ess’ Signature Water to refresh, hydrate and define my second day (dry) curls. However, if you have more thin and/or fine hair, you will LOVEEE this. It’s the lightweight oil you’ve always dreamed of. (And, I’ve heard this directly from some of my friends who have this hair type and find regular hair oils way too heavy for their hair).

I reach for this when…

I need some balancing on my scalp when it’s dry and flaking. I also like using this to tame flyaways and add lightweight hydration back to my dry hair on day 4, 5, 6, 7 hair when it’s very dry.

In Summary…

You know I am a die-hard KE fan at this point, and I truly think what makes her so successful is that she listens to what people want, what is missing on the market and in people’s routines. I am honestly surprised by how many of the products I truly enjoyed using. I know she made a range of products for varying hair types and preferences, and there truly is something for everyone in this line. Some of the products will even bring you similar results, but you can select the method that you prefer for dealing with dryness, flaking, itchiness, oiliness, etc. Another great thing, is that a lot of these products work complementary to each other, but also work really well with other hair products in my routine, whether they are KE or not.

The Scent

They smell like a musky coconut. WHAT A DREAM. Kristin, please. We need a fragrance and candle, etc. etc. Important to note, I also find this line to be less fragranced than her others, for those who are sensitive.
